The Name

Matsu — 松

In Japanese, 松 (Matsu) means pine tree — one of the three sacred plants of the New Year, symbols of resilience, longevity, and enduring strength. The pine stands quietly through all seasons, unbothered, deeply rooted.

That is the spirit we bring to every cup. Unhurried. Deeply considered. Rooted in something real.

The Beginning

A Love for
the Real Thing

Matsu Matcha began with a simple, stubborn belief: that the finest matcha in the world deserves to be experienced properly — not diluted, not rush-processed, not dressed up to disguise poor quality.

We travelled to Uji, in the Kyoto prefecture of Japan, the birthplace of Japanese matcha culture and still its spiritual home. There, under rows of shade cloth in fields where morning mist sits low and long, we found the tencha leaves that would become Matsu.

We work directly with the farmers who have cultivated these fields for generations. That relationship — built on respect, repetition, and shared standards — is what makes our matcha different.

The Craft

Stone-Ground.
Shade-Grown.

Three weeks before harvest, the tea bushes are covered in shade cloth, forcing them to produce more chlorophyll and L-theanine — the amino acid responsible for matcha's calm, focused energy and characteristic sweetness.

The first-harvest leaves — the softest, sweetest, most nutritious — are hand-picked, steamed, dried, and stone-ground at a slow speed that prevents heat damage. The result is a powder of extraordinary fineness and vivid green colour.
